New Pharmacy Schools and their Accreditation Statuses
New Pharmacy schools are opening up at an alarming rate in the United States. Personally, I would not attend a pre-candidate pharmacy school as it is not a smart move fiscally as the loans you will receive as a student at these schools would not be subsidized (you pay interest from day 1, which makes a huge difference on how much you pay back over the life of the loan VS. at an accredited pharmacy school a large portion of loans does not accrue interest until after you graduate). In addition, there is no guarantee that the school receives accreditation; Hawaii College of Pharmacy (HICP) comes to mind. HICP ended up closing their doors leaving their students without a degree and down thousands of dollars. This does not mean that the new schools will all fail, but it is something to be aware of. Do your research before committing to one of these programs.

i think you can receive subsidized loans as long as the school is accredited by the US Department of Education, not the ACPE. Some schools dont have ACPE but do have US Edu. accreditation. Am I wrong?

I have some question about an non-accreditation school. I get accepted from a non-accreditation school, but I am not sure what will happen when I graduate. Is it true that when the school is awarded candidate status, students who graduate from that school will have the same rights as students from accredited school? I mean that they can take the board test, and practice pharmacy in the state. Please let me know if any disadvantage that they may encounter when they graduate. Thank you in advance

The pharmacy school at University of South Florida is actually supposed to open in fall 2011, not 2010.

yes, once a school receives candidate status, you have the same exact rights. most likely, your school will achieve candidate status before you graduate (unless you are the first or second class ever). your disadvantage may be when applying to certain competitive jobs, your school’s newly accredited status may make it tougher to obtain them (universities have name brand recognition too).
